What these tests actually measure
Numbers on their own say little until you know what lies behind them. The three labs test different things.
- AV-Comparatives · Real-World Protection. For several months in a row, security products face real threats found online that same day – exactly as a user would encounter them. It is the test closest to real life.
- AV-TEST · Protection, Performance, Usability. Three things are assessed separately: how many threats were stopped, how much the program slows the computer down and how many times it got in the way unnecessarily. The maximum score is 6 for each area.
- SE Labs. Entire attack chains are reconstructed, from the e-mail to the attempt to gain a foothold in the system – not just individual files.
Why false positives matter
A high detection rate is easy to achieve if a program blocks everything indiscriminately. That is why the labs count false positives separately – cases where a perfectly clean program or website is stopped. Good protection has to be strong on both fronts: stop the threat and not get in the way of work. It is precisely because of false positives that some products with impressive detection figures end up lower in the overall ranking.
How to read the performance results
Performance tests measure how much more slowly, on a protected computer, apps open, files are copied, data is downloaded and websites are browsed. The difference between good and average products is noticeable in everyday work – especially on an older computer. That is why this indicator deserves at least as much attention as the detection rate.
